How to cut pauses and dead air from a video

Updated:

Long gaps make a talking video drag. Here is a fast manual workflow in Cutline: find the pauses on the waveform, split the clip around them and delete each gap with the timeline closing up behind it.

Before you start

You need a recording with speech (a tutorial, an interview, a talking-head clip) and a browser with WebCodecs, such as current Chrome or Edge.

Cutline does not detect silence automatically, so this is a manual method. The upside is control: you decide which pauses to remove and which to keep so the speech still sounds natural.

Step by step

  1. Open the editor, drop the recording into the media library and drag it onto the timeline.
  2. Zoom in on the timeline (hold ⌘ or Ctrl and scroll) until the audio waveform is easy to read. Pauses look like flat stretches between the peaks of speech.
  3. Press Space to listen. Put the playhead at the start of a pause (use ← and → to step a frame at a time, or hold Shift for a second) and press S to split the clip.
  4. Move the playhead to the end of the pause and press S again. The pause is now its own piece.
  5. Select that piece and press Shift+Delete. The piece disappears and the clips after it move left to close the gap.
  6. Repeat for the rest of the recording, then press Space to review the result and export with ⌘E (Ctrl+E on Windows and Linux).

Tips for natural-sounding cuts

  • Leave a short breath-sized gap, around a quarter of a second, instead of cutting speech flush against speech.
  • If you hear a click at a cut, add a very short audio fade to the clip edge.
  • Hide jump cuts in a talking-head video by changing the scale slightly on every other clip, or cover the cut with a text label.
  • Made a bad cut? ⌘Z (Ctrl+Z) undoes it; ⌘⇧Z (Ctrl+Shift+Z) brings it back.

What to do next

With the pacing fixed, add subtitles automatically so the video works without sound, or trim the beginning and end to start right on the point.
